Ryder Cup captains named

As expected, Ian Woosnam will captain Europe for the 2006 Ryder Cup at the K Club - he will be a popular choice among players and the Irish fans.

Nick Faldo has been appointed as captain for 2008 at Valhalla - also a wise move IMO - Faldo is more popular in the US (than in Europe, not than Woosnam) and is a big hero to guys like Luke Donald and a lot of the up and coming pros in Europe, who may well be in the mix in 2008.

Just my opinion, but I think that Woosnam v Lehman puts Europe at a slight advantage already...

that's why I said Faldo is more popular in the US than in Europe, not necessarily more popular than Woosnam. Have admit to never being a huge Woosie fan myself.

I've always liked Faldo and even more so now that he's doing commentary. He and Zinger are really beginning to form a very knowledgable and entertaining tag-team. Isn't Faldo about the most accomplished European since like forever ? To snub him would have been unforgivable, IMO.

Absolutly, Faldo's achievements are second to none and his efforts here with junior academies should be applauded. I think that he will make an excellent Captain in the states.

We all know he went a bit paralysis by analysis as a player but as a leader he will be a tough cookie.

I agree, he seems like the kind of guy you would like to have a beer with.

LOL, Johnny Miller? He is pretty outspoken, but he doesn't bother me a ton. He's paid to come up with off the wall stuff and be critical of everything, and he certainly does that. I also like the Zinger-Faldo team...the little bit the other day when Paul was talking about someone making him putt a really short putt at the Ryder Cup, then realizing it was Nick, was good. Ian and Nick will both be good captains, same with Tom and whomever gets it after that, according to their respective sides...so long as they win.

Right before I read your post, I remembered his name was Johnny.

Sometimes he just acts like golf isnt hard and that pros are supposed to be accurate 100% of the time.

Smart move to have Woosie in Ireland , where he is very popular , and Faldo in USA where he is further away from the vitriolic British press.

Woosie will be a Seve - heart of the sleeve - passion rules - type of leader ,Faldo will be a Langer - deep thinking- cool and calculated - type of leader.

The young British guns - Donald,Casey,Poulter,Davis and Rose - grew up watching Faldo and Woosie so there will be a huge amount of respect.

I think he's trying to be like the John Madden of Golf...the only problem is, John Madden is an annoying git too.

BTW Woosie has announced that he will name his vice captain at the European open in Ireland...and it will be an Irishman, my guess is Des Symth.
