Ernie Els joins the winner's circle...

with an eagle on 18 he just won the Dubai Classic. Ernie is certainly a consistent winner if not a massive winner.

I must say, That is one of the best final rounds I have seen for a long time, No doubt tonight (In the uk) The final round at doral will be very impressive aswell. Gratz to Ernie, He stuck at it and it all came down to a putt, Which I must say, Has not been up to his normal standard. Going to be a very good battle this year, Not just with Phil, Tiger Ernie and Singh, But also other such as Goosen, Weir, Scott, Garcia and a bunch of others.

Now that he's won...is there any way he could be world Number 1 by tonight...

I know this would mean Tiger falling back (which probably wont happen).... but is it numerically possible.

You`ve got to commend Els in the way that he won too. Jimenez looked bitterly disappointed to have lost, having led to the tournament for 2 1/2 days. Two classy golfers there Els with his muted celebrations and Jimenez (looking shell-shocked) accepting the loss...the tactful celebration reminded me of when Faldo beat Norman at the masters in 1996.

Considering how many of the top 20 players in the world are at the Doral/Ford championship, is there something to take into account 'strength of field' when evaluating the # of wins for ranking a golfer? (in response to posts suggesting the win in the Dubai classic should boost Ells significantly).

Of course strength of field determines how many WGR points a finish is at a PGA or Euro event. That means Els gains very little from his Dubai win.
