Aren't they playing it at a different course this year? Or was that 2 years ago that I'm remembering where they were announcing that it would be moving to a different course?
I think this is their second or third season at Mirasol. It had been played at TPC Heron Bay for a few years prior.
A quick check of the scoreboard shows something interesting... the lowest score is Chad Campbell's 64, and the highest score is Shaun Micheel's 79. They have gone in opposite directions since the '03 PGA.
I just looked at the scores on PGATour.com and Vijay shot 1 under. Looks like he'll have a tough time gaining on Tiger in the WGR this week, unless he starts lighting it up. But he'll also have to hope that the rest of the guys DO NOT light it up the rest of the week.
There's another thread on here that says even if Vijay wins he won't pass Tiger. So, a top 10-20 finish for Vijay won't do much in terms of the WGR.
I think this is their second or third season at Mirasol.
This is, in fact, their third season at Mirasol. In 2003, when Justin Leonard held off DL3 for the victory, the tournament was played on the Arthur Hills-designed Sunset Course.
Last year, the event moved to the Tom Fazio-designed Sunrise Course, which is actually a pretty good course...for a Fazio. I guess the most distinctive features are the pushed up greens which fall off on all sides and are somewhat reminiscent of Donald Ross designs. When set up properly (and with help from Mother Nature) this tests iron accuracy and distance-control, and brings the short game into play because we should see a lot of chipping, pitching, flopping and the like.
2004's Rookie of the Year isn't exactly tearing up the tour this year!
They were talking about Tod yesterday on the Golf Channel. Guess he was going non stop during the silly season picking up appearance fees to play events. Being the Open champ has it's perks. I imagine he will start a little slow this year, but I wouldn't be surprised if he won another event this year.
