This week VIJAY SINGH is playing at the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour and ERNIE ELS is playing in the Qatar Masters, now a co-sanctioned event between the European Tour and the Asian Tour. To regain the World Number One spot this week SINGH would have needed 56 OWGR points but the field rating value gives a first place of 50 points at the Honda Classic so TIGER WOODS will remain World Number One. ELS could move into second place if he wins the Qatar Masters and SINGH finishes outside the TOP 25 at the Honda Classic.
I have a feeling that Vijay, the pursuer, may return to his winning ways. I also believe we are going to see a lot of movement within the top four all year.

I expect Phil, Ernie and Retief to at least real in Vijay and hopefully make a run at #1. Who ever is up there, I don't really care. As long as we get 4 or 5 guys making a run at it, it is all the better for us fans.

There is a very real chance that Phil could make a push for #1, but not until next year. He needs all his poor results from 2003 to fall out of the calculations. But if he keeps playing as he has since early last year he will be in the mix eventually.
I'm not sure Goosen can get there - he's further behind than Mickleson and does not seem to be prone to going on tears.

It seems like the World Golf Rankings benefit you more for playing less. Even though VJ played in some weak events, he has won 9 times in the last 12 months including a major. Tiger has won only three times (not including the Target event, which doesn't carry points) in the last 12 months. None of those wins were majors.
No, it benefits you by being consistently in the top 10 in top-tier events. For all Vijay's wins in the past two years, only three of those events have been worth more than 30 points before weighting. Tiger in that stretch has 4 wins of 30+ points before weighting, and many of the stronger events Tiger normally plays in will net nearly 20 points for a 2nd or 3rd place finish, meaning he doesn't lose much from Vijay's wins. Add in Vijay's missed cuts and it's not that tough to see why he isn't firmly entrenched at #1.

I agree Golf Fanatic....VJ wins 11 times and has numerous top10s (top5s)
tiger wins 2 times in the same 12 montths ---yet woods passes VJ
even worse Els won 9 times and LOST ground

It really makes sense. Tiger's consistently finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Vijay's winning, then he's missing cuts. Thus, Tiger's World Ranking points are higher because his consistency is higher.

actually Vijay missed 1 cut in 2004 and 1 so far this year, so don't go exaggerating to make a point. The fact is Tiger has a better top 5 % then Vijay over the last 2 year window, that's why he's #1 right now.

Well, my friend, Ernie did his part! Terrific round to win on Sunday but it also looks like nobody among the leader gave him a real challenge.
Think there is a chance of Vijay being outside the top 25? Makes watching the Honda a bit more interesting today, no?
