Couple of Interesting Articles

The first one talks about how shortening the Tour season would help ratings and thus help the Tour with negotiating a more lucrative TV deal. Here's the link:

http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=2008603

The second article (actually just a chart of the TV ratings from Sunday) is proof that they probably should shorten the season in order to have Tiger playing a higher % of tourneys and matching up for certain with his rivals (particularly Phil). Here's the link:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/2005-...tv-ratings.htm

Thoughts from anyone?

The ESPN article was interesting. Ultimately the economics will drive the destiny of the PGA Tour schedule(always follow the money). With TGC & the other sports channels there is always some tournament on I can watch. As I pointed out in an another thread a reduced schedule is going to hurt the marginal players. Do we care... IMO the more golf on TV the better.

I think only the hard-core PGA TOUR fans are entertained by watching guys like Mike Sposa and D.J. Trahan fighting it out for the 125th spot on the money list. Remember, only a couple of our members cared to watch the Chrysler Classic of Tucson.

If the PGA TOUR season were to be shortened, it may prove to be beneficial for the Australasian PGA Tour. Remember, when it's winter in the U.S., it's summer in Australia. Some of our guys, in order to keep their games in form, just may take a little summer trip down under.

That "trip" doesn't do the American golf watching public any good because of the time difference. People just don't watch tape-delayed golf tournaments.

I do if I don't know the outcome. TGC gets a work-out in my house when I'm the only one watching.

I think the season should be shortened. I understand this will hurt the lower ranked players on tour in terms of playing opportunities, but for the overall good of the Tour, they should pull back a little. Something similar has happened with hockey, too much expansion, salaries soared, and no one is making money now.

There are still other events for the fringe players. Silly season events, nationwide tour, as well as overseas tours.

14and18...I kind of see your logic about hockey, but I don't think that there is any chance of a problem with salaries as long as Tiger Woods is on the Tour. The guy is a cash cow and if they shorten the season, purses will continue the rise that they've had the past 10 years or so. :nodsmiley

Just getting rid of the World Golf Championships would strenthen quite a few events. many of the pros would have to pick three events from the remaining events to maintain eligibility. Then get rid of the B.C. Open or move it to another week and get rid of another event.

The BC Open is an opposite field even, isn't it (played the same week as a Major)? So getting rid of it does nothing useful.
