No one is doubting that VJ has played better than anyone else in the world for quite some time now. He's a great player and has earned his ranking.....keeping it may be another story.

Yeah I do agree that Vijay and Tiger will be switching spots at number 1... up until the masters and us open.... I put money on tiger to regain number 1 again and hold it for a longer period of time then what he did b4... anyone against my prediction....?

Tiger is a force and when he is "on" no one in this world has a chance and Im absolutley serious... not phil, not vijay, not ernie..... Not anyone.... he will always be number 1 in the books of myslef and many others... I dont know how him being in a slump means the guy is never out of the top 5 on the money list playing 2/3 the amount of events that other players are

Tiger is the best golfer in history IMO... number one or not everyone knows he is thier biggest competitor.... when tiger and vijay are in the field... no one says uh oh vijays playing... everyone says uh oh tiger is playing!

I doubt that Tiger will be able to keep the number one ranking for as many consecutive weeks as he did before...but it's possible.

As for Tiger being the greatest player in history......not yet. The record books say otherwise, but you're entitled to your opinion.

I totally agree that Tiger Woods can be the best golfer in the world. I would say IMO he is. He instills fear in his opponents and can play shots no other player can. Will Tiger be the best ever? Better than Snead, Jones or Nicklaus? He will have to learn to control himself pshycologically alot better than he has. His demeanor at the present seems a little uptight. He lets bad shots get to him & this is not a trait of the best player in the history of golf. IMO. I am sure he will get over his temper with a few more years and a couple of kids. Then we will see Tiger truely enjoying himself on the golf course and shoot numbers the likes of which we have not seen yet.

I think the rankings are pretty accurate, especially the top 5. It seems like 6-10 is different every week. But I don't think anyone will argue the guys that are in the top 5 deserve to be there.

As for the Tiger-Vijay debate, Tiger simply gains more points because he plays the tournaments with the most impressive fields. Singh can win all the St. Jude Classics and Old Milwaukee Shootouts he wants against guys that rotate from the Nationwide and PGA Tours, but the World Rankings reward the most points for the majors, the WGC events and tournaments like the Players Champ., the Memorial and the Mercedes. I like the way the system works, and it wouldn't surprise me if Tiger-Vijay-Ernie all have #1 a few times this year, and Retief-Phil close in on them before the year's over.

With this group as closely packed as they are I think we'll continue to see #1 change hands and I'd bet the house that Tiger never holds the #1 spot for as long as he did before(my $0.02). I don't think Tiger was scaring anyone this weekend except for those unfortunates in the gallery that got in the way of some of his wayward shots. Of the top guys I think that Tiger may get into Ernie's head some but not the others.

I think what you said is a valid statement and I agree he wanst scaring anyone THIS week but you wait..... he will be the most feared player on tour... many analists and golf greats all agree that tigers "prime" is yet to come... the guy is young... I imagine that he will hit his peak sometime in the next few years after he is dont tinkering with his swing... but sooner more than later..... :nodsmiley

As for you saying tiger may get into ernies head but no other... Im assuming you are implying he doesnt get into Vijays head you are wayyy out in left field...... Look at the stats and see how many wins vijay has when tiger is in the field in comparison to how many wins vijay has when tiger is in the field...

This is what gets me fairly mad.. people questioning tigers greatness..... whehn players such as: Palmer, Nicklaus, Nelson... all have said he will be the greatest and all players who have been nominated in the face of the public as the greatest

I don't think Tiger's ever going to be as dominant as he was earlier this decade. I still think he's going to win some more majors and is going to become #1 in the world again a few times, but I think we should really take in what he did in 2000, 2001 and 2002 b/c we probably won't see it again for ages. The competetion today is just so strong that I think it's hard for any golfer to dominate. The top 5 players in the world now maybe the strongest compilation of 5 golfers we may ever see, better than it was in the 70s.

While I am a Tiger fan, I wouldn't be so foolish as to call Tiger the greatest player of all time. Quite possibly he could be the most talented, or have had the most dominating performances, but until I see Tiger either overpass Sam Snead's wins record or Jack's majors record, I can't say with a straight face that he is the greatest. Also, he may well peak again in his 30s, but as with many childhood prodigies, his "prime" may well have come before the average great athlete. Not many golfers are playing in such a spotlight from such a young age, so it might make sense that he could hit the pinnacle of his golfing prowess early. Again, I hope he's got better in store, but it'll be hard to top 7 majors and 27 PGA tour wins from 99-02.

He may have already hit it. We don't know. Some golfers hit their prime very early in their career, like Seve, Duval, or Olazabal. Some hit it late in their career, like Singh or Haas. Woods may indeed get a lot better, but that's not my point. My point is that the competetion Woods is facing today may be the toughest it has ever been and I don't think he will ever dominate the way he did a few years ago. I think the top 5 in the world is the best top 5 we have ever seen in the game of golf, my opinion of course. I don't think we're going to see 12 shot margins of victory by Woods anytime soon with Mickelson, Singh, Els and Goosen playing their best golf.

Most golfers didn't start playing when they were 18 months old either. Tiger's not "most golfers" and others have already listed numerous exceptions to your "most golfers" rule. Phil, VJ and Ernie have all improved quite a bit since Tiger's streak and Reteif has moved into that echelon as well. The days when everyone just shrivels up cowering in Tiger's mere presence are over, IMO. That's not to say that he won't regain the crown and even dominate at times, but the aura of "Tiger the Unbeatable" is a thing of the past.

1970's = Nicklaus, Watson, Player, Trevino, Miller.

Count the tour victories and the Majors and then tell me today's top 5 is the best ever
