We all know that perenially Tiger is the best player in the world. There is no arguement against that. Lets look at some statistics, by the age of 29 Tiger has accumulated the following:
57 Worldwide wins (incl. 8 non sanctioned and 8 majors)
Consecutive cuts made (138) next on the list (18)
$47,509,070
Those are just a few.
Seriously, I am tired of hearing about The Big four. What about Retief Goosen? He is hardly ever mentioned. This man has won 2 of the last 4 US Open's and last years Tour Championship. These are not exactly weak fields.
They call the group at the top of the WGR "The Big Four", with Retief sitting in 5th it should be called "The High Five".
Anybody that disagrees with the statement "Retief is underrated" is crazy. And if you disagree with that statement, you disagree with Tiger Woods who said at the Mercedes this year Retief should be included in the "Big Five." Woods also said that he may be underrated to the public, but he is not underrated to the golfers.
My opinion is there's not a "Big Four". I'd say it's a "Big Three + 2". There's 3 top notch golfers, followed by 2 second notch. I think Els, Woods and Singh sit as the Big 3. They're the best. Mickelson and Goosen are both knocking on the door. Goosen has more wins than Mickelson over the last 4 and a half years, including one more major title, although Mickelson has played better the last 6 months to surpass him in the world. Mickelson gets more recognition b/c he's American and everyone loves him.
But I do agree. Reteif may be the most underrated athlete not only in golf, but maybe all of sports.

I don't think he's underrated by most real golf fans. He's not as well known as the others, because he hasn't been around the top as long. What he's doing this weekend is amazing. It would be great to see him win this thing after starting with a 78. It doesn't look like anyone else wants it so far.
... and as soon as I post that he goes & bogeys the last to fall 6 back.
I do not accept the premise that Retief is underrated. By who?
If you caught NBC's little PLAYERS Championship preview, they aired a segment entitled The Magnificent Five in which Retief was more than given his due.
While I viewed today's third-round action, I opened my trusty PGA TOUR Fan Guide (a must-have for any serious PGA TOUR fan) and marveled at the fact that Retief has 12 official worldwide victories since the start of 2001.
When they disuss perenial major contenders, his name does not come up. yet he is a two time US Open winner. Haven't heard his name mentioned in relation to the masters and its in 3 weeks.

I think by some of the media he is. Not saying all of the golf fans. He's definitely not underrated by the players. But I think for the most part the media doesn't seem to give him his due, at least that's my view. Others may disagree. But there was an article by Tim Rosaforte a few weeks ago in which he said it was good for golf that Phil Mickelson won Pebble Beach and surpass Goosen in the rankings so he could make the "Big Four" official.
BTW, NBC must have changed their Players preview. The one I saw showed the big four, and then mentioned "plus Love, Garcia, Weir and Couples." Maybe someone complained that they omitted the Goose and changed it.
