Masters statistics are in...

Of the 50 golfers who made the cut at the 2005 Masters: Woods finished 49th out of those 50 golfers in driving accuracy.

OK. Here's a question: what other golfer could over-come such a "bad club in his bag"? Nicklaus, was mediocre (by tour statistics) with his pitching around the green; Trevino could only hit his woods with a controlled slice; Norman struggled with his putter for years? Any others?

If they were on a course with real rough he wouldn't have come close to winning.

At the same time, he'll probably still finish in the top 10 though. He's done it the last 3 or 4 years...terrible tee shots = top 10 for him...decent tee shots = probable win for him.

nah...he would have used the stinger or the 3-wood.

he knew he could get away w/ a loose driver at the masters and he's smart for doing so.

This is true. The Masters is the one major he can get away with it, but if he wants to win another major this year he's going to have to put it on the short grass more often.

Totally agree with that one, although I do think he's closer than he's been in a while to hitting it straight. He seems to have found a "go-to" shot (the fade) which he hasn't had for the last 3 or 4 years. Even so, he's still in the process of changing his swing and getting used to everything, so there are still bad habits that creep in...eventually he'll get it going. I think at Pinehurst, he'll hit a lot of punch 3-woods and stinger 2-irons.

Does he even hit that shot any more? I can't remember the last time I saw him hit a stinger.

I was thinking the same thing. I can't remember seeing him hit that in a last year or two.... But I don't see why he wouldn't. It seemed like it was a money shot for Tiger

Yes, he hit at the 3rd hole on Sunday. Punched it nicely down the middle...but other than that, you're right. He hasn't been playing it very often the last few years. I've heard that it's because his swing has been so out of whack that he hasn't had enough confidence to pull it off like he used to.

I think this is the reason why Tiger will struggle at Pinehurst. Even though the rough won't be as long as maybe it was at a Pebble Beach or Bethpage, the hardest thing I remember about Pinehurst is holding the greens. If Tiger continues to struggle with the driver, he's going to have a lot of missed greens and will be scrambling a lot. The USGA will likely shave the rough around the greens, and many balls that come from the rough will probably be going down some sort of slope. Tiger, Phil and Vijay hit the fairways in '99 pretty consistently, but they're not as accurate this year. If Tiger's short game is on, he may be able to make up for his awkward drives and contend for the Open.

Now Question in my mind Tiger wouldnt have won if Augusta had ruff the same size as the U.S Open. Tiger isnt mister fairway with his 3 wood either and does he still have a stinger in the bag? He needs to get his driver straightened out to win at Pinehurst. Thats my take

Tiger obviously wasn't too worried about hitting fairways at Augusta National but you're probably right about him needing to improve his accuracy off the tee to be a winner in the US Open. :nodsmiley

Well, some of Tiger's drives were so far right that if it were the U.S. Open he might have gotten good lies b/c of the trampled down grass from the gallery. So, I guess as long as Tiger either hits the fairway OR misses the drive 20 yards to the right, he'll be fine. Just stay away from those trees.
