A field of lesser strength convenes this week at the Peter Jacobsen/Jim Hardy-designed Redstone Golf Club. I have not been impressed with this course and was somewhat pleased to read this from the tournament page at pgatour.com:
Quote:
In 2006 the Shell Houston Open will move to an adjacent course designed by Rees Jones, noted for his work on U.S. Open venues. The Rees Jones course will have no residential or commercial real estate.
Construction on the Rees Jones course began in November of 2003 and the grand opening is scheduled for August of 2005. David Toms is serving as the player consultant on the course.
The weather forecast for Humble calls for possible isolated thunderstorms on both Friday and Saturday, after several days of cloudy skies and humid conditions. Expect a softer-than-usual course which may become even softer, leading to receptive greens and lower scores.
Among the more-established players, this field will include the defending champion, Vijay Singh, Stephen Ames, Mark Calcavecchia, Chad Campbell, Darren Clarke, John Daly, Todd Hamilton, Charles Howell III, Fredrik Jacobson, Stephen Leaney, Geoff Ogilvy, Jose-Maria Olazabal, Rory Sabbatini and David Toms.
What are you expecting this week? Who do you like to contend? Any surprises?
Olazabal has been on somewhat of a roll of late. He's inching closer to an exemption for the remainder of 2005. That's been one of the good stories on TOUR this year. I'd love to see Jose continue his fine play this week. Chad Campbell needs to resume some fine play which started his season. So does Charles Howell. And Sabbs is due for something, isn't he?

Reason: Quotes
Vijay Singh should win here, unless for some reason he's off his game. Other than David Toms and maybe Chad Campbell, I don't think anyone else in the top 15 in the world is in this. I'll probably be focusing more on the Johnnie Walker Classic. Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Luke Donald, Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia battling it out.
I think that course is more of a bomber's paradise, so I think the shorter-hitting rank and file despise it. I know Hank Kuehne and John Daly have both contended there in the past few years so it would seem to support that hypothesis.

so i wonder why davis, tiger, phil, and ernie don't want to play it?
i get angry sometimes at golfers and their choice of events.
can you imagine going to a 4 game series at busch stadium and jim edmonds sitting out the 4 game series not because of injury but because "the series didnt mean much".
i thought the players liked the peter jacobson course?
that is what they said on inside the PGA tour.
i tell ya, players on tour are so weird about things.
Well, Johnny, you know the typical player's mentality. If the course isn't very challenging and doesn't require too much strategic thinking, they love it.
Early on in the day, the story is...no rain! Ok, just kidding, but could we possibly have two consecutive weeks without a delay? Might be a record for this year so far.
Vijay is playing very well so far, -4 thru 8 holes, tied with Maggert, Chris Smith and Andrew Magee for the lead. Charles Howell III is off to a good start as well, -2 thru 7.

Go Chris Smith!!! Have to cheer for the local boy. Make Peru, Indiana proud...
Vijay continues to play solid golf. He could easily have three wins this year.
Heady stuff for Aussies Gavin Coles and Brendan Jones. Gavin was the first-round leader way back in September of '03 after opening the 84 Lumber Classic with a 65. Earlier that year he opened the Buick Invitational with a 66 for a share of second place. Both times he followed his excellent start with disappointing second rounds.
For Jones, the 30 year old who finished sixth on last year's Nationwide TOUR money list, this is the first time he's ever been on the front page of a PGA TOUR leader board.
Nice to see Maggs come out of the wilderness in his hometown event. He usually does well in the Houston Open. I've always enjoyed watching Jeff play. I like his swing. Basic. Simple. Effective. I hope he does well this weekend.
And CHIII. He hit all but two fairways and every single green, and still shot a 70. He took 34 putts! He's obviously striking the ball quite nicely. We'll have to keep our eyes on him.
