In mid-August, I am accompanying my 82 year old Dad to a convention in Vegas, staying at Harrah's. I'm not a gambler and detest the heat so it's hardly my idea of a great vacation but it's the last year my Dad will be a delegate to his Union convention after 60 years of attending and I obviously have to go.
So, all of you travelers on here, anyone have any "must sees" for me? It's been 20 years since I was last in the city and I understand that much has changed.
A must see is The Blue Man Group at the Bellagio. Absolutely the best and funniest show I have ever see. Was there in May of this year and really enjoyed it.
It was a little pricey ($100) but I feel worth it.
I went for a food tasting trip two months ago...Joel Robuchon is fantastic (ask for Chef Simon, tell them Harlan sent you), Alain Ducasse's restaurant at the top of the Time Hotel is good, and Hubert Keller's Bouchon was also very good...went to see the Cirque de Soleil "O" show, was good and Celine Dion was great even though I am not a fan of her music...they also have lots of golf...:)
Hubby and I love Vegas! So much to see and do, 24 hr. town, so fun! Fountains at the Bellagio, take a ride to the top of the Stratosphere or Eiffel Tower, catch a show (we go to see the Folies Bergere at least once a trip now with our comped tix, lol).
Here is my favorite Vegas message board, lots of good info here-
When we travel out, we do tend to spend as much or more time outside of Vegas as in it-- so many gorgeous places in that region of the country. On our latest trip around a month ago we did Death Valley, Yosemite, and Lake Tahoe. We've also done Grand Canyon (North and South rims-- HIGHLY recommended!), Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Sedona, Mt. Charleston, ect. Definitely worth it to rent a car out there, lol-- even if you don't plan to leave town, the rates are good and if you use it a bit will probably save over what you'd spend on the cabs.
Make sure if you do play, even a tiny bit, to sign up for a comp card-- even if you don't really use it, sometimes they'll send you some nice offers.
Even though it is hot, they keep most of the casinos pretty chilly. And, if you hit the pools, you'll find you actually feel cold when you first get out (at least, I do). There are good golf courses too. And, if you don't mind the drive, others up in Mesquite.
Agree with all the tips...particularly Blueman Group...wonderful show. But one thing you can do and take advantage of the air conditioning is simply checking out the hotels. Bellagio and Venetian are great. So is Mandalay Bay. These places are attractions within themselves.
Donnakay, I certainly hope dad is a spry 82 because he'll need to be take in some of these suggestions! If dad's on his own and it's just you looking for adventure please keep in mind that "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!"

Daddy goes to bed about 8:30 every night......hmmm.....maybe Gran-Donna can find some extracurricular fun????
Seriously, though, Dad has decided to end his traveling each summer due to the fact that his stamina is not what it was and he tires easily. To help with this, I have arranged for a scooter rental for him to use traveling between the hotel and convention center and for any sightseeing we may do. It's my understanding that just about everything is accessible out there.
He'll be in meetings for four days of our trip from early AM until 2ish, so those days, we'll limit his afternoons to naps, pooltime & dinner. However, I will follow some of the ideas here as to touring some of the theme hotels while he is otherwise occupied.
Thanks for the input and I'll keep watching for suggestions.
I would second the the Stratosphere especially at night, quite a view. The Eiffel tower offers a great view of the fountain show at the Bellagio. New York New York is another hotel worth checking out.

I totally disagree with Blue Man Group. We walked out at about 45 minutes. I would check out any of the Cirque de Solei(spelling?) except Zoomanity-pretty lame. I liked Mystire(another spelling attempt). Enjoy yourself.
I'm a Vegas veteran, I travel there at least once a year. Got grandkids? M&M World (located next door to the MGM Grand hotel on the Las Vegas Strip
next to the four story Coke Bottle - can't miss it) is a great place to shop for souvenirs. Its four complete stories of M&M candies and M&M gifts. M&M golf related items (logo balls, club head covers etc.) are located on the fourth floor. I know, I bought a M&M World logo ball there last year. Speaking of logo balls, do you collect them? All the casinos carry 'em. I have nearly twenty from the various Vegas hot spots including Hoover Dam. Each year I collect more, I have more logo balls from Las Vegas than anywhere else. Like all you can eat buffets? You haven't seen a buffet until you have been to the one at the Rio hotel. Click the link below to see. The tower at the Stratosphere hotel is cool. It is the tallest building in the US west of the "Ole
Mississip". One can see well beyond the Las Vegas city limits from up there.
It's especially cool at night. Someone else recommended the Hoover Dam, that is someplace every American should see and its not but 30 miles (or so)
outside of town. Also, don't miss the Coca-Cola world located next door to M&M World hence the reason for the four story Coke Bottle on the Strip. Actually its connected to M&M World. If heat is an issue, you can visit the Mandalay Bay hotel and then go over to the Luxor Hotel and then on to the Excalibur Hotel all without ever stepping outside and all in Air-Conditioned comfort. LOL There is is much to see and do in those three hotels. I could go on and on but I'll shut up now. This will give you a good start. Let us know how the trip goes and what you did.
Thanks again for all the input! I feel sure I can keep busy. I leave for Vegas on 8/13, so I'll keep checking back for more suggestions!
By the way, anyone have suggestions for best jewelry store? My daughter collects gold charms for a bracelet I gave her and I generally bring one from anywhere I travel.

Most of the better casino / hotels have "malls" attached to them. Try MGM Grand or Ceasar's Palace among others.
There is also a mall right on the strip in the vicinity of Treasure Island. Just watch for the Neiman-Marcus facing the strip.
