The Players Championship is a prestigious PGA Tour event that used to take place every March but was moved to the month of May starting in 2007. This was done so the PGA Tour schedule would have a big event each month starting from April and ending in August. The tournament is often styled THE PLAYERS Championship and many is often referred to by the media as golfs "fifth major."

The inaugural event took place in 1974 at Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Georgia. It moved to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas in 1975 and then to Inverrary Country Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1976. In 1977, the event relocaded to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida where it was first played at Sawgrass Country Club's Oceanside Course. Then in 1982, the event moved to the Stadium Course at The Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass, or the TPC at Sawgrass.

This tournament prize of $8 million is the highest purse offered. In 2007, $1.44 million will go to the winner.

The Players Championship may be best known for featuring one of the most famous holes in professional golf, the par 3, 137 yard, 17th hole at the Stadium Course.
